Rangers suffered a huge blow in their title pursuit as Gio van Bronckhorst confirmed Ianis Hagi is out for the rest of the season. Interest in Leeds star Crysencio Summerville, and a potential reunion, should now be a priority.
Having scored against Aberdeen in a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie, Hagi was forced off the field of play late on with a knee problem. The Romania international has since undergone surgery to fix it – but he will be out until the summer.
Rangers were already light on the flanks, with Ryan Kent and Scott Wright now the only proper first-team options. Fashion Sakala and Kemar Roofe are better up top, while Brandon Barker is very much a fringe player.
Even with Hagi fit, Rangers needed a winger. It has seen them linked with the likes of Andreas Skov Olsen – but the Denmark winger is unlikely to move to Ibrox this month. Summerville, though, could end up in Scotland.
Hamburg talks: Rangers must hijack move for Leeds ace Summerville
The Scottish Daily Mail (01/01, back page) claims Rangers were considering a move for Summerville earlier this window. The 20-year-old winger has broken into the Leeds side – but has only played eight times this term.
Nothing materialised, despite the prospect of van Bronckhorst forming a reunion with a player he coached in the academy at Feyenoord. Now, Bild claim Hamburg have opened talks to sign the £1.3million (Sun) Leeds man.
It is claimed that Summerville is frustrated at his lack of game time at Leeds – and having entered the final 18 months of his contract, he could go permanently. Bild say Hamburg want a player to join ‘beyond the summer’.
It remains to be seen how much Leeds would charge but Rangers need to act fast. Bringing Summerville to Ibrox would give them a much-needed body out wide – one with pace, skill and goals. They must be on red alert.
