Newcastle United are reportedly interested in bringing Pontus Jansson to Tyneside during the January transfer window.

Well, that’s according to The Guardian after they reported that Newcastle are among the Premier League clubs keen on the towering Sweden international.

A lot of transfer stories around this time of the year are doomed to fail because, let’s be honest, it’s called silly season for a good reason.

But if the Magpies do wind up signing Jansson, it’s potentially massive for the St James’s Park club.

Enormous boost

That’s because at the moment, Newcastle are looking very good value to be relegated from the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side are 19th in the standings after winning only one of their 16 top-flight outings this season – a 1-0 victory at home to Burnley last weekend.

And a central defender of the former Leeds United star’s ilk could be exactly what the North-East outfit need, solidity at the back.

However, this could also be a massive signing for Newcastle because as much as it strengthens them, it weakens Brentford, a potential relegation rival.

The Londoners are enjoying an okay first season in the Premier League, but they’re only seven points clear of the bottom three and it wouldn’t be a major shock if they struggled during the second half of the campaign – even with Jansson.

But without him, and if Newcastle land the former Malmo powerhouse, it’s the transfer equivalent of a six-pointer.

United haven’t been winning those contests on the pitch – the Burnley victory notwithstanding – but winning them in the transfer market, well that could be their key to staying up.
