Liverpool have been encouraged to sign Matheus Nunes after West Ham United failed with an effort this week.
On Friday, Hammers manager David Moyes confirmed that they tried and failed to convince Nunes to swap Sporting Lisbon for East London.
This is a player firmly on Liverpool’s radar and Correio da Manhã reported this week that the Reds were readying a £38 million offer for the midfielder, in light of Thiago Alcantara’s injury blow.
With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones also absent, Jurgen Klopp desperately needs another midfielder in his ranks.
And Jose Enrique took to Twitter to react to West Ham’s botched attempt to sign the Portuguese maestro, calling on his former club to step up their interest.
Will Liverpool sign Matheus Nunes?
If Liverpool drop points because of their midfield situation this season – well, more points following the 2-2 draw at Fulham last week – then Klopp and FSG only have themselves to blame.
You could argue that the Anfield outfit haven’t even signed a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum yet – and he left Merseyside over a year ago.
The Reds did the same when Dejan Lovren quit the club in 2020, refused to sign a replacement and then spent most of the campaign with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out injured.
Liverpool will do well to remember that situation and even if it isn’t Nunes, another body in midfield is paramount.
