According to Correio da Manhã, Liverpool are ready to bid for Matheus Nunes, a player Everton nearly signed under Rafa Benitez, after Thiago suffered an injury.
What’s the story?
Well, this would be a painful one for Everton supporters to take.
Correio da Manhã believe Liverpool are now ready to meet Sporting Lisbon’s €45m (£38m) asking price for Nunes, having learned that Thiago will be out of action for six weeks with a serious hamstring injury.
The Portuguese news outlet add that Jürgen Klopp now just needs to convince the 23-year-old to join him at Anfield, which will surely be a simple task given the high chance of winning silverware at Liverpool.
Correio da Manhã add that Nunes has already rejected an offer from Wolves.
Newcastle are also said to be interested in signing the Portugal international, who is making a name for himself over in Portugal with some tremendous displays.
Liverpool’s interest in Nunes comes after he made 50 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring four goals while also providing five assists.
Liverpool could embarrass Everton
As aforesaid, Everton nearly signed Nunes while Benitez was in charge at Goodison Park.
In fact, those on the board at Everton supposedly made good progress with Sporting Lisbon, and were close to wrapping up a £17m deal at one point.
However, the deal collapsed after the appointment of Benitez, who decided to explore other options.

Now, if Liverpool end up signing Nunes and he shines for the Reds, it would not be a good look for Everton.
It has already happened with Luis Diaz – a man Everton were close to signing in a deal involving James Rodriguez.
The Colombia international has become a fan favourite at Anfield with some scintillating displays from the wing.
Now, lightning could be about to strike twice for the Toffees, as Liverpool prepare a bid for Nunes.
