If Josko Gvardiol agrees to join Tottenham, he could end up becoming one of the club’s greatest ever defenders.

Corriero dello sport have reported that Spurs were looking to step up their efforts to sign the 20-year-old after his masterful showing for Croatia against Belgium at the World Cup.

It was also mentioned that the gifted centre-half was valued at £68 million by RB Leipzig.

However, it seems the Lilywhites are willing to make the wonderkid their club-record signing, since the arrival of Tanguy Ndombele for £63 million (Sky Sports) in 2019.

Gvardiol has the potential to become Spurs’ best-ever defender

In our view, Josko Gvardiol could become one of the greatest defenders to ever put on a Tottenham shirt one day, if he decides to join the club.

For starters, the club would never have a centre-back that possesses such a high ceiling at such a young age since the legendary Ledley King.

And while Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are class acts, they were not half the players the Bundesliga defender is at his age.

At just 20, the Leipzig ace was described as the “best central defender in the world” by Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic (via 24Sata).

And in terms of Gvardiol’s profile as well, the million-dollar question remains what he needs to add to his locker that he does not have already?

As pure defenders go, the youngster is virtually flawless.

The teenager’s reading of the game is second to none, which allows him to constantly be at the right place at the right time to make his signature last-ditch tackles.

As exemplified by his displays against Belgium and Japan in Qatar, Gvardiol’s sense of sniffing out any sign of danger and keeping it at bay is borderline ridiculous.

Additionally, the highly-rated defender is one of the best ball-playing centre-halves in Europe already.

The Croatian international’s line-breaking passes are a joy to watch, and he also carries the ball out of defence with aplomb.

All these facets would make Gvardiol a significant upgrade on any defender at Tottenham.

Plus, Gvardiol’s experience in terms of operating in a back three makes him the dream signing for Antonio Conte.

If Josko Gvardiol decides to join the white half of North London, the club would be signing a true generational talent that could become their greatest-ever defender.

Again, the young buck is just 20 years of age and with him already vying for a place amongst the best in the business, it is not an outlandish shout to suggest he could surpass Ledley King as the club’s best-ever defender.

Whether he joins Spurs is a conversation for another day.
