Jamie Redknapp has lauded Arsenal target Raheem Sterling and how he is the ‘right fit’ for Manchester City after his hat-trick against Norwich on Saturday, as he told Sky Sports PL.
The Sky pundit pointed out that ‘only Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi’ have scored more goals under Pep Guardiola than Sterling.
Given how highly regarded those two are, then it is some serious feat from the Englishman, who is seemingly a summer target for Arsenal, as reported by the Daily Star.
With Mikel Arteta in the Arsenal dugout, those rumours about the north London club being keen on the versatile forward just won’t go away.
The 27-year-old is yet to sign a new deal at the Etihad, but despite Arsenal’s interest in the £50 million man, Redknapp thinks Man City is still the right place for him as he was wowed by his weekend display and how he is a ‘nightmare’.
“He’s fundamental (to how Man City play),” said Redknapp. “If you look at where he can go and he will have options to go anywhere.
“But the lure of Real Madrid and Barcelona isn’t quite what it was. If they can afford him. For him to be there seems like the right fit. I think only Messi and Aguero have scored more goals under Guardiola as a manager.
“He scores so many goals. His movement and desire. Getting into them areas, just to get them tap-ins like he does.
“He doesn’t score that many goals that get you off your seat. But he knows where the goal is, so difficult to defend against. A nightmare to defend against.”
It’s understandable why Arsenal would be keen on Sterling because Arteta worked with the former Liverpool man at the Etihad.
But it would be a huge surprise if he swapped Manchester for north London because the Gunners haven’t challenged for the Premier League for a number of years now.
If the Gunners secure top four, then it opens the door for Arteta to lure the top talents to the club.
But if they do manage to, not sign Sterling, but players of his ilk in the summer, then it would be a serious statement of intent.
