Out of the wreckage of Peterborough’s disastrous 2021/22 campaign, one player has emerged with his reputation – if not totally unscathed – then arguably enhanced.

Jeando Fuchs only arrived from Dundee United in January. But after just three-and-a-half months – and 17 appearances during a Championship campaign ending amid recriminations and relegation – the twice-capped Cameroon international is proving himself to be a player worth far more than that bargain £150,000 price-tag.

“We brought him in because he was going out of contract and the summer and he has been a good signing,” Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony says on his Hard Truth Podcast. “A very good addition.

“There are people who already want him because he is one of the best holding midfielders in the Championship, based on the statistics.”

Will Celtic and Rangers target Jeando Fuchs again?

Forget the numbers, Fuchs passes the eye test too. He was magnificent in Peterborough’s valiant FA Cup defeat to Manchester City in February, earning a ‘9/10’ rating from the Peterborough Telegraph after a typically tenacious, tigerish display at the heart of the midfield. A City side who put seven past Leeds, six past Leicester and Leipzig, only managed two at London Road.

Retain Fuchs’ services and Peterborough will have a midfield general who could take the third tier by storm. A man upon whom promotion foundations can be built.

Though keeping hold of Fuchs is no easy task. Especially with MacAnthony confirming that his suitors are already forming an orderly queue.

“There has been contact with Blackpool, Peterborough and Wigan,” Fuchs told FootMercato last year, before swapping the Lowlands for London Road. “Stuttgart has taken information since this summer. There was contact from Celtic and Rangers too.”

Whether Celtic or Rangers are planning to renew their interest – in the hope that Fuchs will be available again following Peterborough’s immediate return to League One – remains to be seen. But there’s certainly a role for a player once labelled Scotland’s answer to N’Golo Kante on both sides of the Old Firm divide.

Ismaila Soro is all-but certain to leave Celtic in the summer. Rangers, meanwhile, need a new number six with Steven Davis out of contract.

If 70 per cent of the earth is covered by water, the other 30 per cent, they say, is covered by Jeando Fuchs.
