Steven Davis left Ibrox for Southampton in 2012.

If you could add any ex-Rangers player to the current Gers side, which would you choose?
It’s hard to pinpoint one area in which Mark Warburton’s side haven’t been good enough this season. Are there a lack of leaders? A touch of quality perhaps? Genuine top-level experience?
It could be argued the likes of Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and Philippe Senderos were signed to tick all three of the above boxes, though they have so far failed to deliver.

There is of course, still time, or at least in the latter pair’s case, with both turning in improved displays against Partick Thistle on Saturday.
Barton’s Ibrox future is much more murky however. The 34-year-old is due to return from his club-imposed suspension on Monday and has plenty of reconciling to do.
Can he turn it around? The early evidence suggests he’s perhaps not as good as he thinks – and many others hoped – he is (was).
With Steven Davis however, there would be no grey area. The Northern Irishman, who won three league titles during his four-and-a-half years at Ibrox, has become one of Southampton’s key players since leaving Glasgow in 2012.

So that’s ‘genuine top-level experience’ covered, which sort of ties in with ‘a touch of quality’, too. So what about leadership? Well he’s captain of his country and was at Rangers for a bit during David Weir’s absence through injury.
A return to Ibrox is almost certainly off the cards for now, but it’s okay to dream. Besides, who’s to say he won’t come back a few years down the line? He even admitted recently he still looks out for the club’s results (Talksport).
There are few better choices, if I do say so myself.
