Kieran Gibbs thinks Arsenal transfer target Ilkay Gundogan could be ‘on his way out’ of Manchester City because Pep Guardiola is close to signing Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea.

Things are starting to heat up in the transfer market, with Arsenal hoping to land a few big-names this summer, including Manchester City’s Treble-winning star, Ilkay Gundogan.

Was that the final chapter in the German’s career at the Etihad? Well, former Arsenal star Gibbs thinks that might just be the case because ‘Mateo Kovacic is being so heavily linked with Manchester City’, as he told ESPN.

On July 1st, Gundogan will officially be a free-agent, he has a big call to make about his future because, if he does leave Man City, then the next chapter might just be the final one of his career.

The 32-year-old could re-unite with Mikel Arteta at the Emirates, as the Arsenal boss is doing everything he can to sign the goalscoring midfielder.

But Arteta’s chances could be boosted by Kovacic linking up with Pep Guardiola, with Gibbs dropping this transfer claim.

“The fact that Kovacic is being so heavily to Manchester City probably tells you that Gundogan looks likely to be on his way out,” said Gibbs.

Gundogan would elevate Arsenal

It’s the signing Arteta wants the most, alongside Declan Rice, not because you would be getting such a coveted star for nothing, but what he provides during the final few months of the season.

That’s where Arsenal messed up last time out, the same could be said for their collapse when pushing for fourth with Tottenham a number of seasons ago.

Something is missing, that extra edge, experience, bite and know-how. Well, as Gundogan proved once again during Man City’s incredible run to the Treble, he has those qualities in bucket loads, with Rio Ferdinand labelling him a ‘very calm’ player.
