RB Leipzig have officially announced that defender Josko Gvardiol has signed a new contract just days after the reported Manchester City and Tottenham target was subject to an offer from Chelsea.

The Bundesliga giants confirmed on their official Twitter account that the Croatian centre-back has now signed a new deal until 2027 with Leipzig, with the Guardian reporting that Chelsea submitted a £77m bid to sign the 20-year-old defensive phenom in 2023.

City and Spurs have also been reportedly chasing Gvardiol with the defender one of the best prospects currently playing in Europe, however, the former Dinamo Zagreb star has committed his future to Leipzig, with Chelsea now putting plans to sign the centre-back on the back burner.

With the Blues signing Wesley Fofana this week, missing out on Gvardiol isn’t too big a blow, with City and Tottenham also signing centre-backs this summer in the form of Manuel Akanji and Clement Lenglet, yet the Leipzig star remaining in Germany for the future could have big implications on upcoming transfer windows.

Chelsea could regret not signing Gvardiol this summer after new deal

As mentioned, Gvardiol is one of the best defensive prospects in world football and a player who can one day become a superstar for one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and for a club like Chelsea, they could regret not pushing hard enough to sign the Croatian this summer.

After all, the defender signing a new contract with Leipzig means he could only leave in the future for a huge transfer fee, and for the likes of City and Tottenham, they could be unwilling to spend as much as Chelsea will for Gvardiol in the upcoming windows.
