New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has revealed the Chelsea player who left him scarred as a young football fan.

A big Arsenal supporter, Mamdani recently reflected on how the club’s fierce rivalry with Chelsea shaped his early football memories.

During that era, one player in particular caused him repeated heartbreak, becoming a source of frustration for every Arsenal fan who lived through the 2000s.

Mamdani did not hold back when describing how difficult those match-ups were, recalling the pain of facing one of the Premier League’s all-time greats.

Zohran Mamdani admits Didier Drogba ‘traumatised’ him as an Arsenal fan

The New York politician pointed to Didier Drogba’s dominance in London derbies as one of the defining challenges of his Arsenal fandom.

“As an Arsenal fan, I was traumatised by Didier Drogba,” Mamdani said when picking him as a better African player than Sadio Mane.

Drogba’s record against the Gunners was remarkable – 13 goals in 15 matches – and his habit of delivering in crucial moments made him an enduring nemesis for supporters at the Emirates.

Mamdani also mentioned another name from that era who caused plenty of damage.

“They both scored incredible goals against Arsenal,” he added, referring to Drogba and Michael Essien.

Essien’s famous long-range equaliser against Arsenal in 2006 remains one of the most replayed moments of the rivalry.

For Mamdani, those memories have clearly stuck, even as he laughs about them years later.

Didier Drogba’s brilliance still haunts Arsenal fans

Drogba’s impact on Arsenal remains one of the Premier League’s most enduring storylines.

The Ivorian striker not only scored regularly in league meetings but also in key cup ties, including both the 2007 League Cup final and the 2009 FA Cup semi-final.

His big-game mentality defined Chelsea’s dominance in that era – and for many Arsenal fans, like Mamdani, it came to represent years of frustration.

Even now, Drogba’s name still brings a knowing sigh from those who lived through that period, a testament to how often he was the difference between the two teams.
