Zohran Mamdani kicked off New York’s World Cup summer by turning straight back to the Knicks.

The mayor’s first “Morning Pitch” address was supposed to prepare residents for the NY/NJ World Cup match-day experience.

But before weather, transit, or tournament logistics could take over, Mamdani started with the basketball message the city wanted to hear.

According to Josie Stratman, Mamdani is launching a new direct-to-camera series called “Morning Pitch,” where he will share weather, transit, and tournament updates before every NY/NJ World Cup match day.

He opened the first one with the line: “I have just 3 words for my fellow NYers: Knicks in 5.”

That fit his Finals run perfectly. Mamdani attended Knicks games, pushed for watch-party access, celebrated Game 4’s comeback at a Queens bar, and has treated the team’s first Finals run since 1999 as a citywide event.

The Knicks’ support is real, but football may be even closer to Mamdani’s sporting identity.

The Guardian recently described him as an avid soccer fan with repeated engagement with the sport, noting his Arsenal-branded Eid outfit, his fight against FIFA dynamic pricing and his history of African football fandom.

That makes the timing ideal. Mamdani’s mayoral duties now overlap with New York/New Jersey hosting the biggest football tournament in the world, including a local opener between Brazil and Morocco at MetLife Stadium on June 13.

His “Morning Pitch” series appears designed to make that job practical, giving New Yorkers short match-day briefings on weather, transit, and tournament issues before the region’s games.

Zohran Mamdani faces wild New York sports month

The Knicks lead the Spurs 3-1 after their 29-point Game 4 comeback and can win the title in San Antonio on June 13.

If the Spurs keep the series alive, Game 6 returns to Madison Square Garden on June 16, creating the possibility of a title-clinching night at MSG just as MetLife hosts France vs Senegal.

NY/NJ will host six World Cup matches in June: Brazil vs Morocco, France vs Senegal, Norway vs Senegal, Ecuador vs Germany, Panama vs England and a Round of 32 game.

For a mayor sworn in on January 1, this is one of the first major stress tests of his tenure. Knicks in 5 may be the slogan, but Morning Pitch is the job.
