New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani found a creative workaround after James Dolan and Madison Square Garden canceled the New York Knicks Game 4 NBA Finals watch party.

The canceled gathering could have left New York Knicks fans with little more than frustration before one of the biggest nights in franchise history.

Instead, Zohran Mamdani turned the dispute into a broader statement about access, public space, and how a city can still gather when one location is taken away.

Zohran Mamdani Sends New York Knicks Watch Party To LinkNYC

In a post from NYCMayor on X, Zohran Mamdani presented LinkNYC screens as the city’s answer to the canceled Madison Square Garden watch party for New York Knicks Game 4.

“When James Dolan cancels the watch party outside MSG, we bring the watch party to you,” Mamdani tweeted. “Thanks to the NBA, Knicks Game 4 is now playing on dozens of LinkNYC screens across our city.”

The move worked because it did not try to recreate the original event in one crowded space. It spread the moment across New York City, using screens already built into the everyday sidewalk experience.

That made the response feel more pointed than a standard alternative viewing plan. Zohran Mamdani did not simply replace the Madison Square Garden event, he reframed the night around fans who still wanted to feel connected to the New York Knicks.

James Dolan Clash Gives New York Knicks Watch Party A Wider Stage

The dispute around Madison Square Garden had already become bigger than a normal event-planning issue before Zohran Mamdani stepped in.

City officials said a permit had been approved for a limited crowd outside Madison Square Garden. Madison Square Garden objected to the restrictions and canceled the planned New York Knicks Game 4 watch party before fans could gather there.

James Dolan’s side argued that a restricted event would have left too many supporters outside the celebration. The city’s position centered on crowd control, security, and the challenge of staging a major public event outside one of New York City’s busiest venues.

That backdrop made the LinkNYC move sharper. It shifted the viewing plan away from a single pressure point outside Madison Square Garden and gave New York Knicks fans a more distributed way to share the game.

There is no perfect substitute for a packed watch party outside the arena. Still, putting Game 4 on LinkNYC screens turned a cancellation into a very New York workaround, and it gave Zohran Mamdani the final word in a fight James Dolan seemed ready to own.
