Tottenham target Romelu Lukaku received praise from Jermaine Jenas earlier today as Belgium took on Croatia at the World Cup.

It was a crucial game in Group F after Belgium suffered a 2-0 defeat to Morocco on Sunday, although Jenas noticed a real impact from Lukaku after he was introduced at half-time in place of Dries Mertens.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Tuttosport in Italy, Antonio Conte will attempt to sign Lukaku if he loses Harry Kane in 2023.

The Italian has already purchased the Belgium international during his time in charge of Inter Milan, and the 29-year-old went on to remarkably score 64 goals in 95 appearances under Conte, winning the Serie A title in 2021.

Lukaku was eventually sold to Chelsea in a £98m deal.

Unfortunately, the Belgian came into this World Cup campaign with an injury, hence why he could only manage 45 minutes in the crucial clash with Croatia.

However, he still made a “nuisance” of himself despite his physical limitations, according to Jenas.

Speaking on commentary duty for BBC One, the 39-year-old said: “Already Kevin de Bruyne knows what he needs to do, trying to find his big man up top. Good start to the game for Romelu Lukaku, he’s making himself a nuisance.”

BBC Sport‘s Emma Sanders also had good things to report about the Inter Milan No.90’s cameo, saying: “Belgium look a different team with Romelu Lukaku now. They have an outlet up front. Every time he gets the ball, there’s a growing noise of anticipation from the fans behind the goal Belgium are attacking.”

Unfortunately, Lukaku hit the post with the goal at his mercy in the 60th minute, and failed to be the hero as Belgium crashed out of the World Cup following their 0-0 draw to Croatia.

Lukaku would shine for Tottenham

Some Spurs fans may scoff at the idea of Lukaku replacing Kane, after his difficult spells at Manchester United and Chelsea.

However – as aforesaid – the Belgian has more than proven himself under Conte, who seems capable of unleashing a different side to the inconsistent frontman.

If Kane does end up leaving Tottenham in 2023, be sure to keep an eye on Lukaku.
