Alan Shearer has claimed that Liverpool are ‘nowhere near the levels’ during these early exchanges in the Premier League, but he thinks Tottenham are ‘right up there’ with Manchester City, as he told BBC Sport.

The Premier League legend added that it has been a ‘strange’ start to the new season by some of the so-called bigger teams in England’s top flight.

Both Tottenham and Man City are the only unbeaten teams in the Premier League after seven matches, but it’s Arsenal who are sitting top of the tree after beating Brentford 3-0 on Sunday.

On the other hand, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have had an indifferent start to the new campaign, as they have failed to win four of their opening six games.

It’s not helped by the fact that their weekend clash against Chelsea was postponed, after they picked up a morale-boosting win over Ajax in the Champions League last week.

Nonetheless, Shearer shared his thoughts on the new start to the season as players now head for the internationals.

“It’s been a strange start to this campaign by some of the big clubs, with Liverpool being nowhere near the levels we know they can be,” said Shearer.

“Chelsea have been the same, and they have had more upheaval after their change of manager. Manchester United made a really poor start too but they have recovered well, while Tottenham are still unbeaten and are right up there along with Manchester City, who are still the team to beat.”

NORTH LONDON FLYING

It’s still early days, but Spurs and Arsenal are going pretty well so far and are occupying two of the three top spots as they are now in the middle of a gruelling schedule.

After the international break, it’s midweek game after midweek game for all involved in Europe, as the 2022 World Cup takes centre stage in November.

If either Spurs or Arsenal are in similar positions when players head for Qatar, then the belief will start to grow that either one of those teams can do something special this season.

But they have the chance to make a statement in a few weeks because it’s the small matter of the north London derby.
