Koen Casteels has distanced himself from a potential summer switch to Tottenham Hotspur, telling Sport1 he sees no reason to walk away from VFL Wolfsburg.

A Gareth Bale-inspired thrashing of Sheffield United yesterday may have boosted Spurs’ hopes of playing Champions League football again next term but, as it stands, Wolfsburg look far more likely to secure a seat at Europe’s top table.

Despite a defeat to Borussia Dortmund last time out, Oliver Glasner’s well-drilled side are third in the Bundesliga with just three games remaining.

So, if Casteels wants to prove himself among the elite, why would he leave a Wolfsburg side enjoying their best season since Kevin De Bruyne’s 2014/15 heyday?

“It’s not (as if) I still have the absolute goal of moving there,” Casteels said when asked whether he would consider a move to the Premier League during the upcoming transfer window.

“If so, it would have to be a real improvement (on Wolfsburg). I feel very happy here in Wolfsburg and in the Bundesliga. (A departure) is absolutely not necessary.

“I feel very comfortable here and I don’t see any big reason to change anything at the moment.”

In March, the Daily Mail reported Tottenham had identified 28-year-old Casteels as a replacement for the ageing Hugo Lloris.

But, with the 6ft 6in Belgium international seemingly removing his name from the frame, expect Spurs to go all out for Sam Johnstone, Nick Pope or Mike Maignan instead.
