Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day that Miguel Almiron is “playing for his future” at Newcastle United – after he scored the winner for Newcastle on Wednesday night, in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Tyneside.
Almiron, 28, has started Newcastle’s last three Premier League games – in which the Toon have picked up nine points. Narrow wins over Wolves and Leicester was followed up by a 1-0 victory over Patrick Vieira’s men.
The Paraguay international scored the only goal of the game – played in by Bruno Guimaraes on the right flank. Racing ahead of England star Tyrick Mitchell, he opened his body up and curled an effort into the stanchion.
Newcastle legend Shearer reacted on Match of the Day to Almiron’s goal. He stated that his end product has been missing since he joined the club – and that he is playing for his future, but was delighted with his finish.
“He is one of many players playing for their future, we know Newcastle will reinvest. One thing you can never throw at him is his work rate or attitude, which is always superb,” Shearer told Match of the Day.
“His crossing and finishing, you can throw at him. But not tonight. That has been missing from him, his number of goals has never been good enough. He now has until the end of the season to prove he deserves to stay.”
Shearer on Almiron: Newcastle star might have just earned future
Reports claimed earlier this month that Newcastle were willing to sell Almiron for less than half the £21million they paid – just £10million. But after his last three starts, and his goal against Palace, he deserves to stay.
Eddie Howe was full of praise and while he is not going to start week in, week out, his attitude and work rate – as stated by Shearer – is exemplary. Almiron is the kind of player you want in the squad as cover, or back-up.
