Jason Cundy believes Gareth Bale is not currently good enough to play for Chelsea.

The former defender played for both Spurs and Chelsea, and has criticised the performances served up by Bale since returning to Tottenham in September.

Bale scored just four goals in his first 16 appearances since being brought back to London from Real Madrid by Jose Mourinho, but appears to have turned a corner in recent weeks with four goals in his last four outings.

That hasn’t been enough to convince Cundy, however, with the pundit suggesting the Welshman is nowhere near the player he once was.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy said: “He can still pass the ball, that’s not going to change.

“When Wayne Rooney’s legs went, he could still pass. You gave him time and space, he had the ability.

“I’m still not convinced Gareth Bale is anywhere near the Bale he was.”

Host Andy Goldstein replied: “I am”, adding: “because he’s getting back to full fitness.

“He’s still world class, without a shadow of a doubt. His finish for that second goal (against Burnley)…no-one would have saved that.

“His ball to Harry Kane was sublime. I’ve never had a doubt about Gareth Bale.”

That wasn’t enough for Cundy, who responded: “Over the course of the season, I’ve seen enough of Bale to reserve my judgement.”

Goldstein went on to state that he would gladly take Bale at Manchester United and asked Cundy if he would like to see him at Chelsea.

He replied: “I’d have to see more of him before I make that call, but right now? No, I’ve not seen enough.”

Mourinho’s side are back in action this Thursday when they face Fulham in the Premier League at Craven Cottage.
