Harry Kane’s record against Arsenal got even better on Thursday night after the Tottenham Hotspur hitman scored twice in a thrilling North London derby.
Well, it was thrilling for Spurs.
Antonio Conte’s side moved one point behind the fourth-placed Gunners by demolishing Arsenal 3-0.
Kane now has 13 goals in 15 appearances against Arsenal.
The 28-year-old was already the most lethal goalscorer in North London derby history, but he consolidated that status in a massive way with a cool penalty and a cute backpost header in the first half.
The marking for Tottenham’s second goal was non-existent, as Kane wandered in behind Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah without the 22-year-old even being aware of it.
And Lee Dixon, speaking on NBC Sport, has stressed that Nketiah should never have had the job of marking Kane, claiming it wasn’t a ‘fair fight’ in football terms.
He said on NBC Sport: “It’s not a fair fight. You cannot put a centre-forward marking a centre-forward. Kane is one of the best at it [sniffing out a goal]. Nketiah is asleep. He’s having a little look round and Harry Kane doesn’t need to be invited twice.”
Harry Kane’s record against Arsenal
Clearly this is one of those fixtures where the England international just lights up.
Prior to last night, Kane, lauded by Ian Wright, was playing well, but he wasn’t finding the net all that often, though this double could and should set him up for a blistering end to the season – and it could potentially lay the foundations for Tottenham to get into the Champions League.
The Lilywhites host Burnley on Sunday, one day before Arsenal visit Newcastle United.
It’s very possible that Conte’s troops could be fourth going into the final Premier League game of the season next Sunday, with Spurs away to relegated Norwich City and the Gunners home to Everton.
