Noel Whelan critical of Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson

Pontus Jansson is a first-team regular for Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United.

Noel Whelan has suggested on BBC Radio Leeds that Leeds United should sell Pontus Jansson in the summer transfer window.

The former Leeds striker has stated that Jansson is an individualistic player, and that the 28-year-old Sweden international central defender is not good enough to play in the Premier League.

Whelan made the comments following Leeds’s defeat to Derby County in the second leg of their Championship semi-final playoff tie at Elland Road on Wednesday evening which saw them fail to progress to the final.

After the match, the former Malmo FF star – who has been on the books of Championship club Leeds since 2016 when he joined on loan from Torino before making the deal permanent for a transfer fee reported by The Express to be worth £3.5 million – crossed the Elland Road pitch and sat all by himself on the opposite touchline with his head in his hands.

Whelan said about Jansson on BBC Radio Leeds: “It’s all about him. He is not a team player, he’s an individual. It is as simple as that.

“If he is the first to go, fantastic, because they are better defenders. I will tell you what – he is not Premier League class.”

Derby will face Aston Villa in the Championship playoff final at Wembley Stadium in London later this month for a place in the Premier League next season.
