Leeds United have missed out on the chance to face Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final after losing at home to Derby County on Wednesday night.

Leeds were leading 1-0 from the first leg of their semi-final clash with the Rams, with Kemar Roofe giving the Whites an away victory on Saturday evening.

The Whites were strong favourites to go through anyway, and that position was strengthened when Stuart Dallas scored from close range in the first half.

However, Derby turned the game on its head either side of the break. Jack Marriott's first touch of the ball was a goal after a mix-up between Kiko Casilla and Liam Cooper, and after the break, Mason Mount made it 2-2 on aggregate.

Harry Wilson then scored a penalty for Derby to put them 3-2 up, and whilst Leeds hopes were buoyed again when Dallas scored his second to make it 3-3, Gaetano Berardi was sent off.

Derby took full advantage as Marriott scored again, sending Frank Lampard's side through in dramatic fashion, teeing up that play-off final meeting with Villa.

Leeds players were distraught at the final whistle, as play-off failure has come so soon after blowing the chance of automatic promotion, and it seemed that Pontus Jansson took it particularly hard.

The Swedish centre back was left on the bench by Marcelo Bielsa last night, but as pictured by The Independent's Mark Critchley, an emotional Jansson sat on the sidelines in a basically empty stadium long after the game with his head in his hands.

Jansson couldn't impact last night's game, and that may well be something that frustrated him, but Leeds fans will know that the players are feeling this disappointment just as strongly as they are.
