Owen Hargreaves has claimed that only Tottenham Hotspur trio Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Cristian Romero would get into ‘top teams’, as he told Premier League Productions (19/10/22 at 10:30 pm).
The former England midfielder thinks ‘nobody else’ in the Tottenham side would get into the so-called bigger sides following their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night.
Whilst the north London club have started the season in a very strong fashion, a lot has been made of the manner in which the team is playing.
Arsenal, who are sitting at the top of the Premier League table, are playing the pretty stuff and picking up the points like their neighbours.
But the issue facing Conte is that in the three big games they have played – Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United – their performances have to be questioned.
Hargreaves reminded fans that it’s that type of style that got Tottenham into the Champions League last season, as he thinks the club’s bench needs boosting.
“They have some really good players,” said Hargreaves. “But they only have three that would probably get into any of the big teams.
“Kane, Son and Romero. The rest, nobody else is getting in any of the top teams. I think he needs money to get into that bigger bracket.
“He (Conte) does play this type of football. That’s how he plays. He plays on the counter-attack, but the only reason they are in the Champions League is because of this guy.
“When he took over, they were ninth, in a mess and a disaster. They might not be the best watch. But to get to the next level, they probably need a better bench and a better squad. You look at what Man City, Liverpool and Man United have. Ronaldo didn’t get off the bench for Man United.”
ROMERO IS AN UNDERRATED FIGURE
Nobody will argue that Son and Kane would get into many teams across the Premier League and in Europe.
But, outside of those two, their hard-hitting centre-back is an underrated figure and one of their best players since joining the club last summer.
Whilst Eric Dier is the leader at the back, it’s Romero who is perhaps the key member and the best defender of that backline.
That will be proven when he takes to the field for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar next month.
