Tottenham Hotspur fans were left stunned yesterday as Harry Kane was only ranked as the 23rd best player in the World at the Ballon D’Or ceremony.
What’s the story?
Kane finished last season as the Premier League’s top goalscorer and assist maker, even despite Tottenham’s own struggles.
The Spurs talisman then went on to back up his strong domestic showing by scoring four goals at Euro 2020, as the Three Lions made the final.
However, his achievements seemed to be overlooked last night – as he finished below the likes of Raheem Sterling, Lautaro Martinez and Mason Mount at the award ceremony.
It seemed a harsh judgement on Kane who, despite seeing his form dip this term, still has enjoyed a very strong calendar year.
And Tottenham fans were left baffled over why Kane wasn’t ranked far higher on the night.
Unjustified finish
It does indeed seem questionable why Kane didn’t place particularly highly in the awards.
Tottenham’s disappointing form may have played some part, but Kane could hardly have done more last season.
Granted, the goalscorer hasn’t reached his sparkling best this term – but has he really had a worse 2021 than someone like Kevin de Bruyne, who has spent a considerable amount of time out injured?
Kane has previously said that he wants to win the Balon D’or, so his finish last night may actually have stung the Tottenham striker.
And it will be up to Kane to find some form in 2022, which could thrust him up the rankings.
