Lautaro Martinez has finished above Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the Ballon D’or rankings.
Tottenham striker Kane picked up 23rd spot at the awards ceremony last night, while Martinez was ranked as the 21st best player for 2021.
Tottenham bid incoming?
Now, this is interesting as Tottenham are said to be preparing a bid for the Inter Milan striker in January.
EuroSport claim that Antonio Conte’s side are now ‘expected’ to make an approach to sign the Argentine.
Tottenham chased Martinez hard in the summer, but ultimately were unable to get a deal over the line.
The striker penned a new contract with Inter, but that has still not put Conte or Fabio Paratici off.
Quality addition
It shows the level of player that they would be buying that he finished above Kane in the awards.
The Tottenham striker was controversially ranked in a fairly modest position, despite finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer and assist maker last term.

But Martinez also had a very strong season, where he hit 19 goals in 47 matches for Inter.
He is also a player who Conte knows well, and his arrival at Spurs would give them real depth.
Conte has spoken about the ‘level’ at Tottenham not being high enough.
However, if Martinez was to join an attack with Kane and Heung-Min Son, then Spurs would have a strike-force to rival almost any side across Europe.
Tottenham have actually been looking for a forward to add competition for Kane for a number of years now, but finding a player with the requisite quality has proven very difficult.
