Darren Bent has said on talkSPORT (4:30pm, May 20, 2022) that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal should not spend £60 million on Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker believes that Arsenal would be able to find a better forward than Calvert-Lewin for £60 million.
The talkSPORT pundit has added that even at £40 million, the Everton striker would be an expensive signing for the Gunners.
The Sun reported in February that the England international striker is among the players Arsenal are planning to bid for this summer.
Everton reportedly value the 25-year-old at £60 million.
Arsenal urged to avoid Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Bent said on talkSPORT (4:30pm, May 20, 2022): “Not at £60 million. No chance. No way.”
When asked if he would have signed Calvert-Lewin for £60 million 18 months ago, Bent said: “Maybe, but even £60 million is a lot.”
The pundit was then asked if he would take the striker for £40 million.
Bent replied: “Yeah, but I think there’s better out there.”
What should the Gunners do?
In our opinion, £60 million for Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a lot of money, but now that Everton will stay up in the Premier League, Arsenal may have to pay that sum if they want to sign him in the summer transfer window.
If the Gunners do not end up in the Champions League, then they are unlikely to attract top-quality strikers.
Calvert-Lewin is not an ‘elite’ striker, but the £72,000-a-week (SalarySport) Englishman is certainly a very good player who has now recovered from his injury problems.
The Everton no. 9 has scored five goals in 14 Premier League starts this season, and scored 16 goals in the league in 2020-21 and 13 league goals in 2019-20.
