Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has warned Cody Gakpo about signing for the Red Devils, with Arsenal also interested in the PSV Eindhoven superstar.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, the Dutch coach, who was assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at United, has advised Gakpo to not move to Manchester given the current situation Erik Ten Hag’s side currently find themselves in even after their incredible 2-1 win against Liverpool on Monday night.

United have won just one of their opening three games of the new Premier League season, with a winger currently on the English giants’ agenda with Gakpo a reported target for the Red Devils, with Arsenal also in the mix for the 23-year-old attacker, who is believed to be available for £40m.

With PSV missing out on qualification to the UEFA Champions League group stages, Gakpo could be tempted to move to the Premier League with his stock at a career-high, yet for Meulensteen, the current Australia national team assistant coach warned the youngster about signing for United, of all clubs.

Meulensteen said: “If I were Gakpo, I would thank them for the honour and say: ‘I will stay at PSV.’ I would say to him: ‘boy, there will be so many clubs.’ At PSV you had the chance to play Champions League, that is not so sure at Manchester United at the moment.

The former Premier League coach added on United’s interest in Gakpo: “They’re trying to get Antony and Gakpo, but I have my doubts about that. Those guys are fantastic in the Eredivisie, but that’s no guarantee to make a difference here.”

Gakpo is arguably the hottest property coming out of the Eredivisie this year, and whilst signing for United seems like the dream move for the winger, Meulensteen is right to warn the 23-year-old about the potential pitfalls about signing for a club like the Manchester giants.

After all, United are still far from out of their most recent crisis even after an impressive win against Liverpool, and for Gakpo, the attacker can easily become just another name lost in the system should Ten Hag fail to get the best out of the Dutch international at Old Trafford.
