Stevie Nicol says Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is ‘getting a lot of good things said about him’ as he continues to be linked with the Tottenham Hotspur manager’s job.

That talk only increases because wide-mass media reports have recently suggested that Julian Nagelsmann won’t be Tottenham’s next manager.

That young, vibrant and attack-minded coach seems to be the theme Spurs fans want their club to go down and Xabi Alonso certainly ticks those boxes.

At 41, and a playing career that saw Alonso don the famous colours of Real Madrid and Liverpool, he is now in his first managerial job and it’s going pretty well at Bayer Leverkusen.

The German club are sitting seventh in the Bundesliga table and are also in the semi-finals of the Europa League. Although, Jose Mourinho’s Roma hold a 1-0 lead going into the second leg – the former Spurs boss himself stated that Alonso’s side are ‘the best counter-attacking side I have ever seen’.

Could Tottenham be watching that type of football in north London next season? Nicol questioned the Spanish star’s experience, as he told ESPN.

“Xabi Alonso, right now, is getting a lot of good things being said about him,” said Nicol. “But has he really got enough experience to take over a club the size of Tottenham?”

TOO EARLY FOR ALONSO?

Given that the former midfielder is yet to go through 12 months of top-flight management, then it’s perhaps best that Spurs should hold fire with this type of appointment.

Whilst Nagelsmann is younger than Alonso, he has more experience at the top level, most notably at Bayern Munich.

This isn’t about age, but lack of experience for a job that could see Harry Kane leave and the club needing to rebuild from top to bottom.
