Anton Ferdinand has raised a possible issue with Tottenham Hotspur looking at Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as their potential next manager.

The north London club are keen to speak with their top candidates to fill the void Antonio Conte has left.

Tottenham plan to speak with their top target, Xabi Alonso

Chairman Daniel Levy has also led the due diligence stage of their latest search which has seen Alonso gain support.

Reports by De Telegraaf earlier in May even claimed that Tottenham now consider Alonso to be their top managerial target.

Alonso has impressed Tottenham having overseen a remarkable turnaround since taking over as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager in October.

Die Werkself appointed the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder as their head coach with the club sat 17th in the 18-team Bundesliga.

BayArena chiefs sacked Gerardo Seoane following one win in eight games to start the term.

Alonso has done tremendously as the manager of Bayer Leverkusen

Yet Alonso now has the team fighting to qualify for Europe rather than avoiding relegation. He also has them in the Europa League semi-finals against Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

Alonso had no previous senior managerial experience before the Tottenham target over at Bayer Leverkusen.

He had spent a year in charge of Real Madrid’s youth side in 2018/19 before enjoying three seasons as Real Sociedad’s B-Team coach.

Now, Alonso’s successful tenure at Bayer Leverkusen could see the 41-year-old become the next manager of Tottenham from this summer.

What has Ferdinand said about Levy appointing Alonso?

But Ferdinand fears Levy may not give Alonso the time he would need to be a success with Tottenham if Spurs were to hire the Spanish manager.

“Would he get the time?” Ferdinand told Sky Sports News (6/5, 14:42). “If you’re bringing in someone like him, you need to give them time. And I think, does Levy do that?”

Alonso has overseen 17 wins and seven draws in the Tottenham target’s 32 games as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager so far. His Werkself squad has also scored 66 goals to 42 conceded.

Two of those wins also came against Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. While Alonso would come to north London with the experience of winning the 2010 World Cup with Spain.

His trophy cabinet also features Champions League titles with Liverpool in 2004/05 and at Real Madrid in 2013/14.
