Newcastle United looked into signing Wolverhampton Wanderers duo Conor Coady and Max Kilman during the January transfer window.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Newcastle made contact to try and sign both players in January.

Newcastle did end up signing a central defender with Dan Burn arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion on deadline day.

Yet it seems like Newcastle either had other targets in mind or wanted another centre back to join Burn at St James’ Park.

Links to Coady had been rife in the run-up to the January window.

The Sun reported in October that Coady was one of Newcastle’s first targets following PIF’s takeover.

Frank McParland was advising Newcastle on potential signings and, having worked with Coady at Liverpool, wanted the Magpies to land him.

The rumours emerged again just before deadline day with the Daily Star claiming that Newcastle wanted to launch a £25million move.

The deadline passed with Coady still at Wolves though as Newcastle weren’t able to get a deal done.

It now turns out that Newcastle went for Kilman too and that pursuit ultimately met a similar end.

Kilman, 23, is a former futsal star who has now become a Premier League ace having joined Wolves from Maidenhead United in 2018.

The 6ft 4in defender has shown that he has major quality. Tall at 6ft 4in, Kilman is also quick and capable of playing out from the back.

As a left-footed player, Kilman is bound to attract major interest in the modern game and Newcastle seemingly wanted to sign him.

Coady himself has praised Kilman as ‘outstanding’ and it looks like he will have a huge future ahead of him in the coming years.

Newcastle do though have a tall, left-footed defender in Burn so it’s unclear whether they will try for Kilman again.

Coady seems a more realistic target for Newcastle this summer, but you can imagine Wolves will put up stern resistance once again.
