Newcastle United should look at West Ham United’s Cheikhou Kouyate, if William Carvalho joins the Irons.

According to the print edition of Diario Record in Portugal, West Ham United have made a £32 million bid for Sporting Lisbon powerhouse William Carvalho.

It certainly seems as if West Ham are making progress in their pursuit of the 25-year-old, whose potential arrival would have a knock-one effect for Cheikhou Kouyate.

With Pedro Obiang signing a new five-year deal last month, the Spaniard is most likely to play alongside Carvalho in midfield – and Newcastle United should offer Kouyate an escape route from East London before the transfer window shuts.

Newcastle are said to be in the market for a central midfielder but they appear to have missed out on Andreas Samaris who, according to The Sun, was close to joining the Magpies in an £18 million deal but the trail has gone cold on that one.

United’s defeat by Tottenham on Sunday underlined the importance of a powerful midfield figure and Kouyate could be a great addition by Rafael Benitez this summer.

Unlike Samaris, the Senegal international, who joined West Ham in 2014, is a proven Premier League talent and better still he would not cost £18 million – and he’s a huge upgrade on Isaac Hayden, it must be noted.

Kouyate only signed a five-year deal with the Irons last summer, but Carvalho’s prospective arrival would do him no favours whatsoever in regards to playing regularly.

He could, for the first time in his Hammers career, be set for a stint on the bench and Newcastle have very little to lose by enquiring for him.
