Newcastle United and Watford wanted to sign Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United in the January transfer window before he left Aston Villa for Napoli on loan, according to The Athletic.
Tuanzebe was on loan at Villa this season, but he decided to move to Napoli on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the campaign.
The Athletic have reported that both Newcastle and Watford ‘asked about his situation’ before the 24-year-old English defender made the switch to Napoli.
The report has added that Newcastle, then managed by Steve Bruce, were keen on signing Tuanzebe in the summer of 2021 as well.
Napoli better move than Newcastle and Watford for Axel Tuanzebe
In our view, Tuanzebe was right to move to Napoli on loan despite interest from Newcastle and Watford.
Yes, Newcastle and Watford are Premier League clubs, but both are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Napoli are third in the Serie A table at the moment and are aiming to win the Scudetto.
So, we can understand why the 24-year-old choose Napoli over Newcastle and Watford.
Moreover, playing in a different league and in a different culture will help Tuanzebe get better as a footballer and mature as a person.
