Newcastle United are interested in signing Lucas Verissimo from Benfica in the January transfer window, according to 90min.
90min are reporting this afternoon that intermediaries acting on Newcastle’s behalf have been talking to Portuguese giants Benfica about signing central defender Verissimo this month.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) are reportedly looking at 26-year-old Brazil international central defender as an alternative to Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.
Could Newcastle sign Lucas Verissimo from Benfica?
In our view, it is not going to be easy for Newcastle to sign Verissimo from Benfica in the January transfer window.
After all, the 26-year-old centre-back joined Benfica only in January 2021.
Verissimo has made 10 appearances in the Portuguese league so far this season.

The defender has scored three goals and provided one assist in those games.
Verissimo has also played thrice in the Champions League for Benfica so far this campaign.
Benfica are also still very much in the race for the Portuguese league title this season.
They are nine points behind leaders FC Porto and could still win the league title.
After all, only 18 rounds of matches have been played in Portuguese Primeira Liga so far this campaign.
Would Benfica be willing to sell Verissimo in the middle of the season?
Wouldn’t it be more prudent to wait until the summer of 2022 to cash in on Verissimo?
