Danny Murphy has said on talkSPORT (12:19pm, January 3, 2022) that Kieran Trippier would improve Newcastle United.

However, the talkSPORT pundit does not think that Trippier, a former Tottenham Hotspur right-back, should be the priority signing for Newcastle.

The former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder believes that Newcastle need to bring in new centre-backs and central midfielders.

Sky Sports have reported that Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side could reportedly complete the signing of the England international right-back this week.

The Express are claiming that Newcastle are set to agree a £25 million transfer fee with Atletico.

Murphy said: “Well, he is better than what they have got. It’s fine bringing him in if they are going to sign a couple of centre-halves because he cannot do on his own.

“But he is an improvement on what they have got. But I would have thought they would have prioritised centre-backs for now, even central midfield.”

Would Kieran Trippier make Newcastle better?

In our opinion Trippier would make Newcastle better and would be a good signing for the Magpies.

Yes, the Magpies have problems in central defence, but we cannot ignore the pedigree of Trippier.

The former Manchester City prospect won the La Liga title with Atletico last season and has been a regular in the Champions League for years, first with Tottenham and then with Atleti.

So, in our view, PIF are about to make a good transfer deal.

Kieran Trippier may be 31 years of age now and has had injury problems this season, but he remains a player at the top of his game.
