Newcastle United want Enzo Fernandez but aren’t prepared to pay over the odds for the Benfica midfielder during the January window.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who have been having a look at Fernandez’s future.

It’s stated that Newcastle are keen on Fernandez but are concerned about paying an ‘inflated price’ for the Argentinian.

Benfica only signed Fernandez from River Plate over the summer and understandably don’t want to sell easily.

They are sticking to the €120million (£106million) release clause in Fernandez’s contract and won’t sell for anything less.

Newcastle may feel that those numbers are pretty exorbitant and ultimately inflated off the back of the World Cup.

Fernandez forced his way into the Argentina team and ended up winning the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all interested and may be more willing to splash huge money on Fernandez.

O Jogo even claim that Liverpool and United have intensified talks to sign Fernandez this week.

Newcastle again taking sensible approach over Fernandez

Fernandez is an enormous talent and looks like becoming one of the great midfielders of the next 10 years or so.

Seeing Fernandez in a Newcastle shirt would be pretty incredible; even Alan Shearer wants to see him in the famous black and white stripes.

Yet Newcastle are still in the infancy of their project and splashing over £100million on one player just isn’t in the plans.

If anything, Dan Ashworth would probably rather try and find the next Enzo Fernandez over in Argentina rather than pay a staggering fee for the Benfica star.

Newcastle have been smart and sensible with their cash since their takeover and spending £106million on Fernandez just doesn’t fit in.

Seeing Fernandez join a Premier League rival would be tough to stomach but it may allow Newcastle to swoop in for another midfielder instead, somebody like Brighton and Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo.
