Newcastle United fancy signing Diogo Costa and Eddie Howe told scouts to watch him in action for Portugal ahead of a possible summer move.

Newcastle have had a settled goalkeeper for a while now given that Martin Dubravka arrived more than four years ago and has been solid ever since.

Yet with PIF bringing money into the club, Newcastle may now look to bring a new stopper to St James’ Park as an upgrade on Dubravka.

Dean Henderson is the hottest name in the mix for that role amid claims that he has held talks with Newcastle.

There are other names in the frame though and Porto ace Costa is emerging as a prime target.

Newcastle United fancy signing Diogo Costa

Portuguese newspaper Record reported just days ago that Newcastle are eyeing up a move for Costa.

A Bola noted on Saturday that Newcastle do want Costa but Porto want close to his €60million (£51.5million) release clause this summer.

Agent Jorge Mendes is looking to land Costa into the Premier League and Newcastle are the hot favourites right now.

The Sunday Mirror (05/06, p72) now claim that Eddie Howe wanted Costa scouted in action for Portugal against Spain on Thursday.

The game finished in a 1-1 draw as Newcastle took a very close look at Costa in action.

Costa is understood to be open to joining Newcastle but playing in the Champions League for Porto also appeals strongly.

Costa, 22, became Porto’s first-choice goalkeeper this past season and he helped Porto secure a superb title win.

The Swiss-born goalkeeper now has four caps for Portugal and is emerging as their goalkeeper of the future.

Newcastle seemingly fancy bringing Costa to Tyneside but you would have to assume that he is being looked at as an alternative to Henderson as things stand.
