Dan Ashworth has held a transfer meeting in recent days as Newcastle United push to complete new signings ahead of the Premier League season.

The Magpies secured the permanent signing of loanee Matt Targett before turning to new additions.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope and defender Sven Botman both arrived but attacking signings have been hard to come by for Newcastle this summer.

Newcastle have gone for exciting targets like Moussa Diaby, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, but none of them have come off.

The new Premier League campaign is just days away and Newcastle are still fighting to get attacking quality in through the door.

Dan Ashworth has held a transfer meeting

Rumours continue to emerge and Newcastle seem to be discussing a host of different names in their transfer plans moving forward.

The Chronicle claim that director of football Dan Ashworth held a meeting to discuss transfers over the weekend.

It’s stated that Amanda Staveley and incoming CEO Darren Eales were present to talk about potential incomings.

The report notes that three deals are being worked on at the moment, with an eye towards the final third of the pitch in all three moves.

The first is for Leicester playmaker James Maddison, with Newcastle now making a second bid for the Foxes playmaker.

A first offer was rejected over the weekend but Newcastle aren’t giving up on a hugely ambitious pursuit of the creative star.

The second target is Timo Werner as Newcastle seek to take the Chelsea striker on loan.

The German seems to be slipping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and Newcastle are offering up an escape route despite his huge wages.

Finally, Newcastle also fancy Burnley wide man Maxwel Cornet, who is expected to leave Turf Moor after suffering relegation.

Reports claim that Cornet has a £17.5million release clause in his Burnley deal, whereas the Magpies would be willing to pay a higher fee over a longer period of time.

Burnley would be open to that kind of deal, but Cornet has interest from a host of other clubs too.

Ashworth will have surely discussed all three of those moves in that transfer meeting, with Newcastle hoping for a breakthrough before facing Nottingham Forest this weekend.
