Newcastle United have been on some journey since the Saudi-led takeover and then the arrival of Eddie Howe.

It probably happened prematurely, but they deservedly secured Champions League football 12 months ago and locked horns with the elite.

But Newcastle’s Champions League appearance, added to the FA Cup win over Sunderland, was probably one of the very few positives of the recent campaign.

There will be no European football at St James’ Park next term and that’s a body blow for the team.

No Upcoming Fixtures

Now, it seems as though a fair few changes will be made to Newcastle’s playing squad this summer, with previously proven performers heading for the exit door.

Callum Wilson played a key part in the team getting to the Champions League and was deservedly part of England’s 2022 World Cup squad.

But he didn’t even get a sniff of making the Euro 2024 squad because constant injuries have held him back – he played 995 minutes of Premier League football last term.

Darren Ambrose feels a transfer to Crystal Palace could be on the cards for the 32-year-old after he ‘saw the story’ of Dominic Calvert-Lewin possibly joining Newcastle, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Crystal Palace player thinks Oliver Glasner’s side ‘could do with something’ in the attacking third, even though Jean-Philippe Mateta ended the season by scoring 14 goals in his last 16 matches.

“I was thinking this when I saw the story come out,” said Ambrose about Wilson possibly leaving. “I think there will be suitors, for sure, in the Premier League.

“I think a team like Crystal Palace could do with something. He is 32 and he isn’t getting any younger. So, the next move is probably his final move. But he may decide to move abroad. Saudi Arabia would be sniffing around, for sure.”

Newcastle United need to move Callum Wilson on

Firstly, they have Alexander Isak who netted 21 goals last term, so they are more than covered, in that regard.

If Wilson was much younger, then perhaps you would give him the benefit of the doubt.

But if any sort of offer, from any league, was put on the table for him, then they need to consider it, let him go, take him off the wage bill and bring in a younger face.

It’s a shame for the player in question because his goalscoring record has been pretty strong at Newcastle – 48 goals in 108 games. But you just can’t trust him to start over 30 matches in a season now.
