Newcastle United have been looking for Dan Ashworth’s replacement for more than six months, but they have finally found the man to be their new sporting director.
Ashworth was placed on gardening leave by Newcastle in February as he confirmed he wanted to join Manchester United.
After months of talks, Man United and Newcastle came to agreement on Ashworth last week as he began work on July 1st at Old Trafford and now just days later his replacement at St James’ Park has been confirmed.

Paul Mitchell takes charge at Newcastle United
The man coming in to lead the club is former Monaco supremo Paul Mitchell.
HITC exclusively revealed in March that Mitchell wanted to replace Ashworth and held talks about the role.
However, despite lengthy talks with Mitchell – Newcastle initially went elsewhere as they tried to appoint Crystal Palace’s Dougie Freedman, but he turned down the chance to move to St James’ Park and signed a new deal in South London.
Newcastle also looked at Johannes Spors of 777 Partners, but that also did not progress. They looked at other options including Christopher Vivell – who has since joined Manchester United.
Newcastle had suggested they would get through the summer with CEO Darren Eales, chief scout Steve Nickson and Andy Howe – assistant head of First Team Recruitment.
HITC is now told that Newcastle’s hierarchy has decided that with two months left in the current transfer window, and the issues that the club had with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) at the end of the month – they needed to make a firm decision on an appointment.
That saw them look back at Mitchell and they have now opted for him following fresh talks in the last week.

As well as having a strong track record on the transfer front, Mitchell’s extensive experience within the Red Bull organisation and their multi-club model was also a major appeal to Newcastle as that is an avenue they will be looking to go down in the coming years.
