The French midfielder is earmarked for a late 2017 return to training after a horror knee injury.

Nice midfielder Wylan Cyprien has been catching the eye recently with his performances in France.

The 22-year-old has been one of the stars of Nice’s season and the Sunday People reported that Newcastle United were leading the race to sign the player – whilst Tottenham Hotspur and Everton were also keen.

However, any chances of a team signing him this summer took a major blow on Friday night when he picked up what looked a nasty injury in the 2-2 draw with Caen. Cyprien was immediately ruled out for the rest of the season, and a report from L’Equipe today suggests that he will not be heading anywhere in the Premier League this summer.

They report that the player left hospital yesterday after surgery on the injury Tuesday. The injury was a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The report suggests he may face nine months out of action – meaning he may not play again until 2018.

With an injury that severe Newcastle, Tottenham, Everton and any other interested party would be mad to make a move for the player at present.

If he can come back in the second half of next season and show he has still got what it takes to be a Premier League player, then perhaps Newcastle and Spurs will revisit their interest.

But right now, it would be a hiding to nothing.
