The Magpies are reportedly leading the race to sign highly-rated Nice midfielder Wylan Cyprien, according to the Sunday People, although they will face fierce competition in the race to sign the Frenchman, with a whole host of Premier League sides monitoring the situation.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been in sensational form for the Ligue 1 outfit this term, scoring eight goals in 29 league outings, and has been a major driving force behind his side’s impressive rise to third in the table.

The report from the Sunday People claim that whilst Newcastle are the current front-runners to win the race for Cyprien’s signature, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are also keeping tabs on developments.

His chances of making a move to England suffered a blow on Friday night, however, when he suffered a serious knee injury.

He has subsequently been ruled out for the rest of the season, and quite how much of an influence that will have on any kind of potential transfer remains to be seen.

If Cyprien makes a full recovery though, he would undoubtedly be a huge coup for the Tyneside outfit, should they manage to bring him to St James’ Park in the summer.

His high stamina levels, and fiercely tenacious playing style would be ideally suited to the rigours of the English game, and he would slot perfectly into the Newcastle midfield alongside Jonjo Shelvey.
