Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is now targeting the January transfer of Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Goodison Park natives are also now braced to receive for bids.

That is according to The Sun, which reports Howe is eying a £35m move for Calvert-Lewin in the mid-season sales. Newcastle view the England international to be their absolute top target for offensive reinforcements. The Magpies were also big admirers of his last summer.

Newcastle’s interest in Calvert-Lewin’s transfer from Everton has not faded since Howe had an eye on him in the off-season. Even though the 25-year-old has only scored once through nine Premier League appearances this term. He has also only started in seven of his games.

Calvert-Lewin has endured yet another injury-riddled season at Goodison Park under Frank Lampard this term. The striker missed the first nine games of the Blues’ top-flight campaign with a knee injury. He later sat out two games with shoulder, hamstring and knee problems.

Injuries held the 11-cap striker to just 17 Premier League appearances with five goals and two assists last term. Calvert-Lewin further only started 15 fixtures during 2021/22 whilst he was recovering. The worst of them was a quadriceps injury that kept him out of 14 matches.

Everton are braced for bids for Calvert-Lewin as Newcastle target his transfer

Everton expect Calvert-Lewin to earn interest in the January transfer window, nonetheless, as Howe now targets a move by Newcastle. The Toffees are braced to receive offers for the Sheffield United product, as well. He left Bramall Lane for Goodison Park in 2016 for £1.5m.

Newcastle are eager to negotiate terms with Everton for Calvert-Lewin’s transfer during the mid-season market. But Toon chiefs are also willing to wait for the summer sales to secure a deal. He will have two years left on his £100k-a-week contract at the end of the season.

Calvert-Lewin – who Darren Bent has called ‘exciting’ – would likely replace Chris Wood at St James’ Park. Yet the 6 ft 2 star will still have to compete with Callum Wilson (who has six goals in 14 Premier League games this term) and Alexander Isak (three in four) under Howe.
