Newcastle United have expressed their interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Oliver Skipp, but a move for Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey is unlikely, according to the Daily Mail.

Steve Bruce is desperate to improve his engine room options ahead of the new Premier League season. The Toon have bid for Marseille talent Boubacar Kamara and are working to re-sign Arsenal’s Joe Willock on loan, while Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury is also of interest.

Yet Newcastle are yet to make a single senior signing this summer and risk leaving Bruce with a weaker squad. So, the Magpies have informed Spurs of their interest in Skipp in case Nuno Espirito Santo decides to loan him.

However, Tottenham want to wait until later in the window before deciding on Newcastle’s bid to loan Skipp. Spurs have high hopes for their 20-year-old academy product and may offer him a first-team role under Nuno next term.

He spent last season on loan at Norwich City and helped Daniel Farke’s Canaries secure the Championship title. The Daily Mail now report the Carrow Road outfit want to re-sign Skipp for their Premier League return. But he has impressed Nuno in pre-season this summer.

Farke was also full of praise for Skipp during the midfielder’s time at Norwich last term. The Canaries boss called him ‘outstanding’ and ‘unbelievable’, via the Eastern Daily Press, when confirming that his campaign had been cut short by a game due to a foot injury in May.

Skipp started 44 of his 45 Championship appearances, scored once and provided two assists from a holding role. The only game the England U21 international did not open but featured in came against Preston North End in April.

Bruce moves for Skipp after Newcastle rule out Ramsey transfer

Bruce has moved to sign Skipp on loan from Tottenham after Newcastle ruled out targeting Juventus midfielder Ramsey. The Daily Mail add the Welshman is an unrealistic option for this summer as his age and wage are prohibitive.

Reports by Goal had claimed Newcastle approached Juventus to discuss a deal for Ramsey to return to England. The former Arsenal playmaker is available for €20m (£17m), per Tutto Juve, and could even move for just €12m (£10m). But he earns £400,000-per-week in Turin.

Newcastle now face a waiting game for Tottenham to decide if Skipp will form a part of Nuno’s inaugural plans. But Bruce may face further disappointment, as The Telegraph claim Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy told prospective managers that he wants the midfielder to be given a chance next season, while searching for Jose Mourinho’s replacement this summer.
