Newcastle are set to sign Matt Targett permanently with the Aston Villa left back set to head to Tyneside for a medical later day.

The Magpies are expected to be very busy this summer and have already been linked with a whole host of potential additions.

Hugo Ekitike is the main rumour at the moment but he seemingly won’t be Newcastle’s first signing of the summer.

That instead looks set to be left back Targett as Newcastle make their decision on turning his loan move permanent.

Newcastle are set to sign Matt Targett

The Daily Mail reported late on Tuesday night that Targett was closing in on his permanent move to Newcastle.

90Min now add that Targett is heading to the North East for a medical today ahead of joining Newcastle in a full-time deal.

Targett joined Newcastle on loan from Aston Villa in January, with a view to a permanent move at the end of the season.

A £15million permanent option was included in the line and Newcastle now look set to activate that.

Targett fared well in the Newcastle side, living up to the ‘fantastic’ tag given to him by Eddie Howe upon signing, but there have been doubts about a permanent move of late.

Newcastle have also been interested in another left back having targeted Atletico Madrid star Renan Lodi.

That opened the door for other clubs to show an interest in Targett, with 90Min reporting in April that Leeds United, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers were all keen.

Newcastle have now made their mind up though and Targett will be able to call St James’ Park home for a while yet.

That may leave Leeds to go shopping elsewhere for a new left back, and surely means that Lodi won’t be joining Bruno Guimaraes at Newcastle any time soon.
