Newcastle United have identified recent England debutant Angel Gomes as their top target for the January transfer window – but face competition from several clubs.

Gomes excelled during the international break after receiving a first call-up to the England senior squad.

The former Manchester United man came off the bench in the 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland and was rewarded with a first start in the 2-0 victory at home to Finland earlier this week.

Newcastle face transfer battle to win Angel Gomes signature

According to The Sun, Gomes is of interest to Newcastle, but they aren’t the only club eyeing up a move for the 24-year-old.

With less than a year left on his current deal at Lille, Gomes will be free to talk to clubs as of 1 January 2025, who would be able to sign him for free on a pre-contract deal to join in the summer.

There are currently no plans for Gomes to sign a new deal at the Ligue 1 giants, which could encourage them to sell for a cut-price deal in January to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Fellow Premier League sides Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, along with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund are all interested in the midfielder, who had several scouts come to watch him in action at Wembley Stadium earlier this week.

Lee Carsley’s verdict on Newcastle transfer target Angel Gomes

England interim boss Lee Carsley was the man responsible for giving Gomes his first senior call-up after watching him excel under his guidance at U21 level and the Three Lions temporary boss was full of praise for his performance against Finland.

He said: “He loves football, he watches football, he’s interested in tactics. He knows all the players in any league. If you ask him for any feedback, you need to be prepared that he’s going to give you some feedback on the session, or how we’re going to build up, or the positions.

“He’ll often say about some build-ups he’s done with other clubs, or what he’s played against, because he’s obviously playing in France, so he sees different things.”
