Earlier in the transfer window, it was said that Newcastle and Leeds had shortlisted Nathan Collins as a target.
The Republic of Ireland international impressed for Burnley last season despite their relegation to the Championship, and now, the 21-year-old has earned a swift return to the Premier League.
What’s the story?
Well, Eddie Howe and Jesse Marsch will now have to look elsewhere, as Collins has joined Wolves.
Bruno Lage has won the race to sign the promising centre-back, with the Irish defender penning a five-year contract at Molineux in a deal worth £20.5m – he will replace Romain Saiss in the Midlands.
What impresses us about Collins is the fact that Burnley notably improved once he began to gain regular starts in the Premier League in January, following a move to Turf Moor in June 2021.
For whatever reason, Sean Dyche didn’t use him much, but after Mike Jackson took the reins and played Collins regularly, Burnley very nearly avoided the drop – eventually, Leeds survived instead by three points.
They also embarked on a stunning three-game winning run with Collins at the back, a streak he helped to kickstart with a goal in the 2-0 win over Southampton.
In our view, Wolves have got themselves a gem, so Howe and Marsch should be kicking themselves.
Newcastle & Leeds have alternatives

After missing out on Collins, let’s take a look at some alternatives Newcastle and Leeds could pursue.
In regards to the Magpies, they are said to be fans of Napoli colossus Kalidou Koulibaly, a player who is seemingly on the market.
Chelsea have apparently agreed a £34m deal for the Senegal international, however, so Howe must act quickly.

At Leeds, there has been talk of a move for another defender in Gerardo Arteaga.
The Mexico international isn’t exactly similar to Collins, although we wouldn’t be surprised to see Leeds focus their efforts on him now Wolves have secured the Irishman’s signature.
Whatever happens, be sure to stay tuned, as there is still plenty more to come in the transfer window this summer.
