Newcastle United hope their January transfer Kieran Trippier can convince Jesse Lingard to leave Manchester United and now join him at St James’ Park before the end of the month.
That’s according to The Northern Echo, who note the Toon are hopeful Trippier’s influence can sway Lingard’s train of thought. The Magpies have revived their pursuit of a deal with the Red Devils to hand Eddie Howe another creative option and improve their survival bid.
The Tyneside natives failed to hold on to beat Watford on Saturday to remain with just one Premier League win this season. Only Burnley (1) have also failed to win at minimum three games this term. The two clubs now sit 19th and 20th in the standings on 12 and 11-points.

Newcastle hope Lingard’s close relationship with Trippier now helps Howe seal a transfer of the Manchester United maestro in January. They struck a bond during England’s World Cup campaign in Russia in 2018, which the pair have since maintained over the past few years.
Lingard and Trippier first played for the Three Lions together in October 2017. The 29-year-old has since made 18 of his 32-caps while Newcastle’s new £12m full-back has also been on the pitch. But they are yet to combine for any goals over the past four-and-a-bit years.
Manchester United rebuff Newcastle’s Lingard transfer pursuit
However, according to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have rebuffed Newcastle’s bid to seal Lingard’s transfer. The Magpies sought to acquire the midfielder on loan. But the Red Devils hope to keep the summer free agent to occupy a backup role in Ralf Rangnick’s side.
Lingard favours a loan move away from Old Trafford to keep his options open at the end of the season. Manchester United may also change their stance if Newcastle offer an onerous loan fee. Yet the Toon may be hesitant to pay a sizable sum to only seal a temporary deal.

The Daily Star had reported Newcastle were willing to pay Manchester United £3m to seal a permanent transfer for Lingard. So, may show reluctance to paying heavily for someone they would lose come June. Even if the midfielder thrived on loan at West Ham last season.
Former Irons boss Alan Curbishley lauded Lingard’s efforts at the London Stadium during his six-month stay. He scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 league games.
“[Lingard] has been a revelation,” Curbishley told Optus Sport. “He has come into the West Ham side angry because he cannot get into the team at Old Trafford. He has also come in hungry and that’s the sort of player you want.”
