Patrik Schick was one of the stars of Euro 2020, and he followed up his incredible exploits last summer with a ridiculously impressive Bundesliga campaign.
Indeed, the Czech striker netted 24 goals in 27 games for Bayer Leverkusen this season, and, understandably, his exploits in Germany put him on the radar of many Premier League clubs.
Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle were amongst the interested parties, but unfortunately, it looks as though they’ve missed out on the chance to sign the striker who has been described as an ‘absolute dream’.
Indeed, it has just been announced that Schick has signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, and with the attacker committing his future to the Bundesliga outfit, it’s fair to say that he won’t be on the move this summer.
Newcastle, Arsenal and Spurs will have to look elsewhere if they want to sign a new number nine in the upcoming transfer window, but unfortunately, players like Schick are hard to come by.
Indeed, only five players in Europe’s top-five leagues have outscored Schick this season, so the pool of goalscorers more potent than the 26-year-old is very shallow indeed.
Of course, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Spurs. After all, they already have Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane at the club, but this may be a bitter pill for Newcastle or Arsenal to swallow.
The Magpies are hunting for a new striker this summer, and while the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been linked, neither striker has had a season even half as good as Schick’s this time around.
Arsenal, of course, are desperate for a new number nine after the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and they would have benefitted massively from the arrival of Schick.
We may have to wait a few more years to see Schick come to the Premier League.
