Newcastle ace hails ‘obviously world-class’ Mo Salah following Liverpool win

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn paid tribute to a ‘world-class’ Mohamed Salah assist following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Liverpool at St James’ Park, speaking to the Magpies’ website. 

What is it they say about form only being temporary.

Salah, after a difficult run of form both for himself and Liverpool as a whole, proved that his class is undoubtedly permanent with an assist the likes of Eric Cantona, Dennis Bergkamp and Kevin de Bruyne would have been proud to call their own on the banks of the Tyne. 

The Egyptian only needed one touch of his trusty left boot to carve open Newcastle’s usually impenetrable backline; a gorgeous first-time through ball setting up a chance Cody Gakpo could hardly miss.

“I think teams like Liverpool – I know they’re not in the position they expected to be – but they’ve got that quality. The front three are really good players,” sighs Burn. “For the second goal, Salah’s little dink pass, obviously world class. It’s hard to defend.

“We’re disappointed because of how many clean sheets we’ve had. But I am proud of the lads.”

Salah’s assist may have hogged the headlines but Trent Alexander-Arnold’s second in 22 Premier League games should not go unnoticed. The England international set up Darwin Nunez’s opener with the sort of raking, defence-splitting diagonal he has made his trademark under Jurgen Klopp.

Suddenly, following up Monday’s Merseyside Derby win over Everton with another 2-0 triumph, Champions League qualification no longer feels quite so fanciful for Jurgen Klopp’s recovering side. There are now just six points separating Newcastle in fifth and Liverpool in eighth; Fulham and Brighton sandwiched in between.  

“Both goals were outstanding,” Klopp tells The Athletic. “The pass from Trent for Darwin and from Mo to Cody; top class. A bit more of that would have been really great. But, for today, it’s absolutely fine. 

“When you are not in your best moment you have to fight for this, and that’s what we did. We got our second win in a row. It feels great to be honest. We haven’t had this for ages, so it’s a good day.”
