Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump will both be at Madison Square Garden for Game 3, but the New York mayor has made clear they will not be sharing the same view of Knicks history.
For a few hours, the Knicks have turned a divided city into one loud room.
That matters because Monday night brings together a former New York resident in the President and the city’s current mayor, without pretending their politics have softened.
Zohran Mamdani keeps Knicks Game 3 distance
Mamdani said that the Knicks’ Finals run has made New York feel like “the world’s greatest small town,” a rare civic mood before Game 3 against the Spurs.
“I will be at Game 3. I will be in a very different section of the stadium… And I think we look forward to welcoming any New Yorker who is excited for the Knicks to have that chance to win that championship.”
It fits the strange public rhythm between the two. Mamdani and Trump have had awkward moments of mutual support since their Oval Office meeting, when figures from opposite ends of the political spectrum found common ground on New York issues.
The Knicks now offer an easier bridge. Everyone can root for the Knicks and a title push. That does not mean the old differences disappear once the ball goes up.

Game 3 hype makes New York feel bigger than politics
The mood around Madison Square Garden has become its own event, with Game 3 bringing the Knicks home up 2-0 and ticket prices soaring.
Recent resale listings had the cheapest seats around $8,800 to nearly $10,000, while premium listings were reported between $155,000 and $200,000.
That demand is driven by history and spectacle. Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Timothée Chalamet and Tracy Morgan are among the celebrity Knicks faces expected around the Garden, while Trump’s attendance has added heavy security.
The basketball stakes justify the noise. New York became only the third team to take the first two NBA Finals games on the road, joining the 1993 Bulls and 1995 Rockets.
Both teams won the championship, leaving the Knicks with a perfect historical precedent but a small sample. It is not a guarantee, yet it explains why the city feels close to something it has waited decades to touch.
For Mamdani and Trump, the Knicks are the one thing they can publicly want together. Game 3 shows the limit of that unity, same team, very different sections.
