New England Patriots GM Eliot Wolf has delivered a blunt assessment of the 2026 NFL Draft class, suggesting it falls short of historical standards despite the hype around Fernando Mendoza.

The class has drawn attention due to Mendoza’s rise to the projected No. 1 overall pick.

But internally, there appears to be a more measured view of the overall talent available this year.

Patriots GM Eliot Wolf questions Fernando Mendoza’s draft class

In comments shared via Doug Kyed, Patriots GM Eliot Wolf offered a direct evaluation of the group.

“I mean, I would say, putting it in a historical perspective, it’s probably not great,” Wolf said.

The remark points to a broader concern about depth across the class rather than focusing on any one player.

Even with Mendoza viewed as the leading prospect, the overall pool has not been rated as strongly compared to previous years.

Despite that assessment, the emphasis remains on execution rather than perception.

“If you do your job and do the work, there’s going to be good players there anytime you pick. You have to pick the right ones, the guys that are going to fit,” the Patriots GM stated.

The approach reflects a focus on scouting and fit, rather than relying on the perceived strength of the class.

For teams like New England, the priority is identifying players who align with their system, regardless of overall draft reputation.

In that sense, while the 2026 class may not stand out historically, the Patriots’ stance suggests opportunity still exists for teams that evaluate correctly.
